Located on the southwest tip of Great Abaco, 40-miles south of Marsh Harbour sits Sandy Point Beach. A large number of seashells makes this one of the best beaches in The Bahamas.

LIGHTHOUSES
Elbow Cay/Hope Town:
Built in the 1860s, the 89-foot, red and white Elbow Reef Lighthouse is the only manned, kerosene-burning lighthouse left on the planet. Climb the winding staircase to the top for one of the most beautiful views in all of Abaco. Abaco Mainland:
The Sea Shell Museum in Cherokee Sound has reopened. The only such museum in
Abaco, the Sea Shell Museum is features many beautiful and unusual shells, as well as
antique bottles and coins. The museum is located under the Comms Tower on the
front street — look for the prominent signs once you reach the settlement. Admission
is FREE and the museum can be opened at almost any time by prior arrangement.

The Wyannie Malone Historical Museum brings Abaco’s history alive in fascinating displays of ship building, ship wrecks, hurricanes, and torpedoed freighters. Glimpse the past in furnished rooms, clothing and housewares of bygone times, and see historic faces and places in their historic photo collection. (The museum is temporarily closed due to damage from Hurricane Dorian.)

Green Turtle Cay:
The Albert Lowe Museum is the Bahamas’ first historical museum. Through an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, antiques, photographs, documents and rare Lucayan artifacts, the museum documents and preserves Bahamian history and serves as an educational tool for the nation’s children. (The museum is temporarily closed due to extensive damage from Hurricane Dorian.)
Green Turtle Cay:
Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden Designed and created by American sculptor, James Mastin, this national monument incorporates twenty-four bronze busts of individuals who feature prominently in the history of the country and Abaco. The centerpiece of the garden features life-size bronze sculptures of two Loyalist women – one African and one European – symbolizing the founding mothers who gave birth to a united Bahamian people.

Junkanoo, Festivals & Culture
JUNKANOO: The celebrations of the Junkanoo Festival have been evolving in
The Bahamas since the early 1900’s, but today, it serves less as a street festival
and more as a grand parade celebrating the Bahamian culture. Organised groups
of up to 1000 people spend almost the whole year preparing costumes and
entertainment for the event, and to them, that’s half the fun. Though the exact
origin of the festival is unknown, there are plenty of theories. Many believe it was
established by John Canoe, a legendary West African Prince, who outwitted the
English and became a local hero. The most popular belief, however, is that it
evolved from the days of slavery. Loyalists who migrated to The Bahamas in the
late 18th Century broughttheir African slaves with them. The slaves were given three days off during the Christmas season, which they used to celebrate by singing and dancing in colourful masks, travelling from house to house, often on stilts. The uncertainty of its origin only proves that Bahamians don’t need a reason to throw a wonderful celebration.​Green Turtle Cay is well known for their New Year's Day Junkanoo Parade, and we are hopeful for the return of Saturday night Junkanoo's in Hope Town during the summer season.
​
Art for the Parks is a weekend festival in Marsh Harbour, which benefits Abaco’s six national parks, and showcases the creations and crafts of dozens of Bahamian artists and artisans.
​
Love Rush Weekend – An entire weekend of Junkanoo in Marsh Harbour, featuring junior and senior Junkanoo competitions. Love Rush 2020 was cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Dorian, but we hope these colourful and lively weekends will resume in years to come.
​
Songwriters in Paradise (SIP) Hope Town – a week-long festival in mid-February, featuring world-class songwriters performing at a number of different venues.
​
Bahamas Cancer Society (Abaco Branch) Art Show – an annual show featuring Bahamian artists and a silent auction, benefitting the Abaco branch of the Bahamas Cancer Society.
​
Friends of the Environment Reef Ball – An evening’s worth of fun and fundraising, in recognition of those who protect and sustain our local environment.

Island Roots Heritage Festival – Commemorating the shared island roots between Abaco and Key West, this weekend-long event, which takes place the first weekend in May on Green Turtle Cay, allows Abaconians to reconnect with family from the U.S., Canada and beyond and introduces visitors to Abaco’s music, art, culture and cuisine.

Sandy Point Homecoming and Conchfest – During the first weekend in June, Sandy Point’s Development Association sponsors this event which showcases traditional cultural activities, including music, cuisine, games and a church service.
​
Sojer Day – Every second year, Man-O-War residents celebrate their boat-building heritage with Sojer Day, which features musical performances, local cuisine, exhibits of historic artifacts and a activities for the entire family.
​
Regatta Time in Abaco – A week-long event with daily races and award ceremonies held at Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay and the Abaco cays.
​
Cheeseburger in Paradise – This “beach party with a purpose” is held on Fiddle Cay each July, with proceeds benefitting a variety of Green Turtle Cay community organizations, as well as the Amy Roberts Primary School. Guy Fawkes Night – Green Turtle Cay celebrates its British heritage with a variety of fun fall activities, culminating in the burning of Guy Fawkes effigies.

Big Hill Box Cart Derby – This November event showcases carts designed and created by local residents and businesses, competing in junior and senior divisions.

Green Turtle Cay Festival of Lights – From Thanksgiving to New Years, the settlement of New Plymouth is alight with vivid holiday displays on homes, lamp posts, docks and public spaces. A schedule of events includes a family fun night, a golf cart parade and Santa’s arrival.
​
Abaco Christmas Festival – Kicking off the holiday season on the first Saturday in December, this Marsh Harbour event features an arts & crafts bazaar, food court, musical performances and a Junkanoo parade.
​
Hope Town’s Christmas Village transforms Taylor Park into a winter wonderland. Events during this weekend-long festival include tree lighting ceremonies, a Christmas market, ice skating under the stars, Christmas Junkanoo and an appearance by Santa.
